Happy Less Than A Week Before Thanksgiving!

Ok, so that isn’t a real holiday…but it should be…WHY?  Because there is a lot to do this week, but I want to help make your week a bit easier.

First, this is a reminder that if you have a 16+ pound Frozen Turkey, it needs to go in the fridge by Sunday 11/19!!

Second, if yours is smaller allow 1 day for each 4 pounds of bird.  (Be sure to set the turkey in a container to avoid any ‘juices’ from leaking all over the fridge and cross contamination.)

Next, it is time to think about all the side dishes, you will need to make sure you get everything in order before the big day.  If you will have multiple things that need oven time, remember that some things can be cooked ahead of time and then just reheated before dinner.

The Turkey will need to sit at room temperature for 30-45 minutes to rest and let the juices redistribute after it is cooked.  So this can be a good time to reheat anything you cook ahead of time.  You can make ahead, dressing & sweet potatoes for sure.  You can use this ‘resting’ time to brown your rolls.

Now, make sure you have all the ingredients you will need, don’t forget the essentials…check your fridge for butter, milk and eggs.  Don’t forget the ICE…..  And check to make sure you have corn starch in the pantry for your gravy.  These are just a few, but you can see how these things can get overlooked.  So, make the list…look at your recipes….make sure everything in the recipe is accounted for.

I am hearing that there are stores around the Phoenix area that will actually be open on Thanksgiving morning.  So, maybe it won’t be as bad as years past, when I would have to send the husband out to every convenience store around for miniature marshmallows.

One last prep reminder, don’t forget to time your bird accordingly.  A 16 pound bird will take about 3-1/2 to 4 hours to cook.  Then allow a good 30 minutes for the resting time.  So, if you are wanting to eat around noon, don’t wait until 10am to put the turkey in the oven.  :-)

Anything I am forgetting to remind you about?  Just add it to the comments.  :)
