Idiots Guide To RecyclingWant to make the step toward living a little bit greener? The first thing you can do is to pledge to recycle! Recycling goods can make a huge impact on the environment, and not to mention your trash can!

Anybody can recycle. If you follow these simple tips, you will be a recycling expert in no time flat. It just takes a little bit more time to build the habit and a promise to yourself and your family to actually do it. My family is so used to recycling now that my children even correct others when they don’t recycle. (That’s a lesson for another time)

Idiots Guide to Recycling Top 5 Tips:

1. Find out what recycling services you have near you: If you don’t already participate in curb side service, call your local utilities/trash company and ask if they offer curb-side recycling or where you can take recyclable materials. If they don’t currently offer one, write a letter suggesting they start.

2. Hit the Yellow Pages. Look for listings for private recycling plants. A lot of times these plants will actually pay you to recycle materials like aluminum and scrap metal. It’s a win/win.

3. Set up a bin in your home to put your recyclables: Put a bin in a convenient place where you will always see it. Ours is right next to our trash can. That way we really have NO excuse not to toss it in the recycling bin. This bin can be an extra trash can, an old recycling bin, or even a neat organizer like the Rubbermaid Recycling Center.

4. Always rinse your recycling: Always remember to make sure your recycling is rinsed out. One dirty item can ruin an entire truck load of recycling items. It takes just a second to rinse them out or remove food scraps. Don’t let others hard work get ruined because you didn’t clean out your recycling.

5. Get the whole family involved: Recycling can be fun. Yes, I said fun. Get the whole family involved. Tell your kids they are the recycling patrol. You might be surprised that eventually your kids are keeping YOU in line!

Ready to get started? It’s really easy to recycle and build the habit. Trust me, the Earth and your community will thank you!
