Raising a family these days can be hard on the pocketbook!  I know it doesn’t have to be, that is why MyCouponLady is here.  I am trying to save us all money on a daily basis.  Well, CouponCodes.ca is trying to do the same.  They list the promo codes and coupons available to help you save money as you shop online.  It is a pretty easy to use service.  Just head over to their site and browse thru the sites with promocodes available. They even have a special landing page to list brand new deals online.  This landing page will give you all the newest offers.

Or, if you have something already in mind that you need to get…say a new computer…you just head over to the CouponCodes.ca site and click on Categories and then Computers and Electronics.  You can then get a list of the available deals.

As I was browsing the sites, I couldn’t help but notice the printables tab on the top of the screen.  The first coupon that came up was a coupon for McDonalds!  I may not LOVE McDonalds, but my girls sure do.  The printable coupons available were for Canadian McDonalds (which left me bummed), but it is still cool that my Canadian readers can get great printables for McDonalds.

Now that we are living in an almost cashless society…the “Change Jar” concept has almost gone the way of the dinosaur.  It used to be easy to save a little every day by emptying your pockets into a jar each night.

So, how can you get into the habit of saving without even realizing it?  We all know that it is the little things done consistently that really add up.

So, here are my top tips to make saving a regular part of your life:

  1. Open at least 1 (if not more) Savings Account wherever you have your checking account.  One note, just make sure that there are no fees if they account goes below a certain amount or anything like that.  You want to save money, not spend more.  I have 4 Savings Accounts with ING Direct.  One is specifically for our “Rainy Day Fund”, One is specifically for “Jerome’s Car” and I have 2 more for my girls.

    Next, set up an automatic deposit with your goal in mind.  You want the automatic deposit to come out of your paycheck and go directly into the savings account, if at all possible.  This makes a huge difference when you can’t ever see the money.

    If you think you can’t handle saving much, start with $10 out of each paycheck.  When you get used to that, increase it to $20 and keep increasing it until you reach your goal.  It is amazing how quickly you can get up to a few hundred dollars a month.

  2. Round up your debit card purchases.  This can be a little more difficult to do, but it is totally worth it.  When you shop, whatever your total is, round it up to the next dollar or even the next $10 amount.  So, if your total was $54.63, you could round it up to $55 in your checkbook, or round it up to $60.  Then keep track of difference, and once a month, transfer that amount out of your checking account into your savings account.
  3. These last 2 help you get money INTO your savings account, but just a quick note, to keep money from going OUT…avoid debt at all costs!  What good is it to go and clip a coupon to save $100 on a purchase, if you are going to put it on a credit card and pay finance charges of $200!  The reason I have a separate savings account for “Jerome’s Car” is that his car is almost 10 years old and will need to be replaced probably within the next 5 years.  So, I am making car payments to myself.  I figured out what we would need to pay if we were to go buy that car right now, and started putting that amount into savings.  As soon as we can buy a car outright with that savings, we will walk into the dealership with cash.  There is a whole other story about why to avoid the Finance area of a car dealership.  I will have to do a post on that later.  :)

I hope that helps you get back into the habit of saving.  It makes a huge difference doing little things everyday.  As you do it, it becomes more natural and you will look and find other ways to save.

One of the EASIEST dinners I could ever make…Boiled Shrimp.  It is almost as easy as boiling water.  My favorite thing is to make my own sauce.  We don’t always keep cocktail sauce here at the house, because my husband doesn’t like horseradish.  So, I make this special dipping sauce, that is AMAZING.

First, boil 4-5 quarts of water.   To that water, add either crab boil seasoning mix, or your own combination of salt, red pepper, black pepper.  If you choose to not use crab boil seasoning, you may also want to put a lemon cut in half, couple cloves of garlic and a cut up onion (it can be really large chunks).

Once the water with seasoning has come to a good boil, add the potatoes.  Depending on how large the potatoes are.  I generally want to get this done as quickly as possible, so I will cut the potatoes in half.  :)   It also gives more seasoning to the potatoes.

Now, after the potatoes are almost ready (generally 15 minutes or less), Add the shrimp.  I generally do a whole pound or more at one time.  Because, the shrimp we don’t eat tonight with the potatoes for dinner…we will eat on a salad tomorrow.  They really don’t last long around here.

As soon as you add the shrimp, turn the heat off the pot of water.  You don’t want to overcook the shrimp and you want them to have time to soak up some of the seasoning.  Leave them in the water for about 2-3 minutes.  Yes, it really is that fast!  Just take one out and test it…if it is white all the way thru, then it is done.

Drain in a colander and you are done.  Now for the special sauce.

This is my special sauce.  My mom made it for me when I was little and wanted cocktail sauce.  I fell IN LOVE with it.  It sounds simple, but it really is great.

  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoon of mustard
  • 5 drops of hot sauce (I like Frank’s Red Hot)

Just combine and serve.  :)   Sometimes I want it hotter and will add more hot sauce.  Sometimes I like it to have more mustard.  Just depends on my mood.  :)

A quick tip about shrimp.  They are put on ice and most of the times frozen directly on the boat when caught.  So, when you see ‘fresh’ shrimp in the meat case at the store, know that it was frozen and is now thawed.  So, if you decide to get it, use it immediately.  I prefer to get bagged frozen shrimp.  When the shrimp goes on sale at my meat counter, I will ask the butcher what size bag they came in, and buy a whole bag.  Generally they come in 2-5 pound bags.  They are individually quick frozen and have only ever been frozen once.

My defrost method is a quick defrost.  I just put the number of shrimp I desire into a bowl and cover with cold water.  Then I dump that water after a minute or two and repeat.  Waiting longer between water changes.  It only takes about 10 minutes and 3 water changes to get them defrosted.  :)

One other note…and this is just my personal preference.  Most shrimp companies use a chemical called Sodium Tripolyphosphate (which is a ‘wetting’ and preserving agent) to help hold moisture in the shrimp.  I prefer the taste of shrimp without this chemical.  I also find that they will grill better without this chemical.  To make sure your shrimp doesn’t contain Sodium Tripolyphosphate , check the ingredient list.  Pretty simple, it will just say Shrimp.

It looks like it’s going to be another HOT summer here in Georgia, so I feel like outside activities are going to be few and far between in the next month or so. Sure, it’ll be fun to hit the park early in the morning or in the evening after Daddy gets off work, but even after 5 p.m. it’s still pretty darn hot here.

So, it’s time to come up with a list of things to do besides playing outside. We have a good bit of options in our area, so here are some things that have come to mind so far:

  • Hit the pool. Our city’s pool is pretty inexpensive. Children 4 and under are free, children 5-12 are $2 a day, and everyone older than that are $3 a day. That’s really not bad at all. Last year we bought a summer pass, but we didn’t use it enough to get our money’s worth. This year, I think we might pay day-to-day until we see just how much we’ll be there.
  • Go to a splash park. I am really bummed that we don’t have a splash park super close to us. There is one on the other side of Atlanta, probably about 40-50 minutes from here, and there’s a fun one in Chattanooga where my parents live, which is about an hour and a half away. If we had one closer to our house, we would be there all.the.time. My daughter LOVES splash parks, and they’re pretty inexpensive. The one here in Atlanta is $1 per child, and adults who don’t go in the water are free. If you go in the water with your kids, it’s just $1 extra.
  • Indoor play areas. We have a TON of indoor play areas nearby, whether they be geared toward toddlers (the one we LOVE is closing for good, and my daughter will be so sad) or bouncy places. Most of them have low prices (our favorites are $3-$5 for the day, which is pretty good in my book), and they wear my child out. Usually, I’ll take my Nook or my laptop and play or read while she plays. It’s a win-win.
  • Summer library programs. My library has a bunch of programs in the summer in addition to the typical story time programs. For example, in June, they’re doing a Touch-A-Truck event where they’ll bring in fire trucks, ambulances, etc. and the kids get to climb inside them. And, they’re going to have a magician come at some point this summer. These programs are all FREE!
  • Go to the mall. Does your mall have a soft play area? Ours does, and it’s a fun place to go meet up with friends for playtime/adult talk time. Then, you can hit the food court for a cheap lunch!
  • Have lunch dates. Sometimes, I take my daughter to McDonald’s or Burger King for a lunch date and let her play for a while. Fast food is less expensive, and she has a blast on the play equipment.

Most fun things these days cost money, but there are still plenty of ways to have fun without spending anything. Here’s a list I’ve come up with. Do you have any to add? Leave them in the comments!

1. Free museum admission. If you have a Bank of America card, some museums will give you free admission the first weekend of the month. If you have a museum in your area, make sure you call and ask if they participate!

2. Picnics. Are you a member of a moms group? Plan a picnic at the park!

3. Story time. Check with your local library for its story time schedule.

4. Host a playgroup. Invite some of your friends and their kids over for some play time!

5. Free ice cream cone. If you have a Bruster’s near you, kids under 4 feet tall can get a free kiddie cone. Other ice cream shops may do this as well.

6. Rainy day craft fun. Do you scrapbook? Keep your scrap papers in a box and pull them out on a rainy day to let your kids make an art project.

7. Photo day. If your kids are old enough and have their own cameras, take them around town and let them take pictures!

8. At home story time. Have your kids write their own story and illustrate it, and then read them to you.
9. Move day. Pop some popcorn, put in a Disney movie and have a movie day!
10. Talent show. Let the kids perform for you!

Did you realize that most of the “Toilet Bowl Cleaners” on the market actually call for use only in a well ventilated area?  One of the best cleansers I have ever used, is what I affectionately call the “Toilet Cleanser Super Bomb”.

To make this “Super Bomb”, you need:

  • 1/2 Cup of Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Cup of Vinegar
  • 6-8 drops of Tea Tree Oil (disinfectant + it smells nice)

First, add 1/2 cup of Baking Soda to the toilet bowl.  Swish it around with the toilet brush.  Let it sit for a few minutes to dissolve completely into the water.

Afterwards, add the Tea Tree Oil and the vinegar.  Just watch out.  As you pour the vinegar, that is when the ‘bomb’ part happens.  The chemical reaction that happens will bubble and help you disinfect and clean the toilet bowl.  After the bubbling goes down a bit, swish around with the toilet brush, and you are done.  I leave it in there until the next time it needs to be flushed.

You can make this for pennies, and it is non-toxic and very environmentally friendly.

I like to do different breakfasts on the weekend.  I have one that I haven’t made in a while and will probably make this weekend.  Cinnamon Monkey Bread.

It is really easy to make, and quite delightful.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of Pillsbury Grands Biscuits
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of melted butter
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar

Preheat the oven to 350. Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray.

Cut the biscuits into 6-8 pieces each.  (Most recipes call for them to be cut into quarters, but I like the pieces to be even smaller, it makes the whole dish have more cinnamon flavor).  Roll each piece into a ball, and then roll them into the cinnamon sugar and then place in the loaf pan.  Sprinkle brown sugar over the top, drizzle melted butter over it.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until done.  Turn out onto a cookie sheet and pour any of the ooey gooey goodness left in the pan over the top of the bread and you are ready to start pulling pieces apart and enjoy.

I love things that are personalized, and I have Lucy’s name in a couple of places in her room, but I wanted to try my hand at making something to go either somewhere else in her room or maybe even on her door. We were at Michael’s one day, and I found some really cute craft items to use, so I figured I would give it a try.  You can put anything on it. I just thought her name would be cute.

I debated painting the wood two colors (and bought two colors of paint just in case), but I ended up thinking one looked nice. I painted it green and had to do two coats.

Once it dried (which really didn’t take too long — maybe 30 minutes to an hour for each coat), I used my hot glue gun to glue the letters and the butterfly. I think it turned out super cute!

It really was an inexpensive project, too. I still have a lot of the paint left for a future project, and I have three more of each letter since they came in packs of four. Here’s a breakdown of the cost:

  • Wood – $1.99
  • Paint – $1.19
  • Letters x 4 – $3.96
  • Paint brush – $0.49
  • Butterfly – $0.50

So, it cost me a grand total of $8.13, which is probably less than you would pay on Etsy for someone to make one for you. And, like I said, I have leftover paint and letters for another crafting project. I think I might have to make these for my niece and nephews as well!

I remember making these Orangesicle slushies when I was young and I loved them.  They are simple and if you use a drink mix like Tang, they are nutritious too!  The taste reminds me of an Orange Creamsicle (or an orange julius).

They are Easy Peasy to make too!

  • 8 oz of milk
  • 6-8 ice cubes
  • 3 Tablespoons of Tang mix  (you can use pre-sweetened koolaid too for other flavors)

Blend and you have a yummy summer treat.

I like to use my Hamilton Beach Personal Blender for these.   I recently ordered the white one with 2 cups and lids so that I have an extra cup.  :)

  4. Spin daily. Just make it part of your daily routine to go in and spin. Since it is kinda boring, this is something I have my 6 year old daughter do for me sometimes. She likes doing it and I don’t have to. :-)
